Notes and credits As always, all characters and settings belong to, or were inspired by, j.K. Rowling, without whose work this story would not exist. This is the image that came to me *before* I wrote "Those Who Live By the Sword"; if you enjoy it, you might like that one, too!
I am including an lj cut as a courtesy; the story follows:

Walkman - a drabble

Filius Flitwick stared, bewildered, at two of his first years as they walked down to the Halloween feast. Miss Maxwell had strings coming from within her robe; they were attached to two tiny shells she had inserted in her ears. As he watched, she took one shell out and held it her friend's ear. A tinny noise seemed to be coming from it. The children bobbed their heads up and down in unison, and little Miss Vance's lips moved, just as they did when she was memorizing a spell. Miss Maxwell waved one hand around in a random pattern.

As Filius stood watching, Severus Snape came up behind the pair with his usual long strides. "Miss Maxwell," he growled, "put that Walkman away, or I shall confiscate it."

The little girls jumped and pulled the shells out of their ears, and the tinny sound ceased. "Walkman?" Filius asked as the teachers headed to the High Table. "What is a Walkman, Severus?"

The younger man's lip curled. "A Walkman," he said, "is a Muggle device for damaging one's hearing. We, on the other hand, have the Weird Sisters."

"Oh," Filius said, still bewildered. "I see. Yes. So we do."

Nice to see those two first-years again.

(And such clever girls too, managing to get muggle electronics to work at Hogwarts! :-))

Yes, of course the Walkman is wildly AU. But hey - these are Ravenclaws! I'm sure they could figure out what JK Rowling couldn't (smirk).
