I am now unlocking this essay, having done a brief rewrite, but I'm sure I'll need to do another rewrite. Have I toned it down enough? Does it make sense to you? I have added a brief list of citations, but need to get exact info for some of them, particularly websites. Looking forward to your responses! I did try to outline it, but, at this stage, I'm not sure that makes sense, either. Otherwise -

My very first Snape essay:
Jun. 11th, 2007 07:00 pmOkay - I am going to try to post it. I have saved it as a pdf and will be inserting it below - hope this works! Please go easy on the comments and corrections; my understanding of the story has been refined considerably thanks to the conversations I've had both here on livejournal and in real life. But, after rereading it, I've got to say a couple of my basic conclusions are unchanged. I still think, as I've always thought since July, 2005, that Snape is Harry's bodyguard. I still think he killed Dumbledore (if he did kill him) only because Snape himself had to stay alive to protect Harry. I'm going to add some notes at the end of the essay to explain how my understanding has changed, and to clarify points I no longer agree with. Here goes:

I sometimes look in on the whysnape fansite, and a fan called Sionna Raven had some fascinatiing things to say about Snape's true role and nature. As some of you know, I've pointed out that the colors of the Prince family crest are red and gold; Sionna gave the family motto, which is "miseris succerere". She translates this as "to help the unfortunate". This motto fits in very well with the protector/healer pattern I've noted in Snape. But the whole discussion is very interesting. This is the third of a series of four stories detailing the relationship between Albus Dumbledore and Severus Snape. It takes place on September 2, 1996, and is really more a vignette than a story (my sister tells me it comes across very well as the opening of a novel, but I don't know what will happen further on - I may continue if I get inspired!)
For now, it is about 4,100 words long. It is rated G, and the main characters are Dumbledore, Snape, and three Ravenclaw first years. The story follows the cut. This has not been beta read, except by my sister, so crit is welcome.
