Oh, good job! I love the visual impact of the rocks, the physical infirmity, the child's knowledge - even the bologna sandwich in the water.
This reminds me of some learned observation (probably covered in all those liberal arts courses I never took) that all stories are ultimately either "The Hero Goes On a Journey" or "When a Stranger Came to Town." (Or both.) And that they pivot on working changes in the protagonist.
This is such a nice picture of the Hero re-awakening to energy and confidence. :D
