The one obstacle I can see to this series eventually being embraced by the good-old-day enthusiasts is that a lot of them really, really hate fantasy, especially if magic is involved. Otherwise I think you're spot on. There's a huge amount of racism and sexism buried under the fun, and I can see non-religious reactionaries using this the way that conservative Christians use the Narnia books.
