But really, power? What power did she hold, ever? If she wanted power she could have bought into the pureblood supremacy line; she had one of the best ancestral credentials of anyone in her world. No, she TOOK from her husband the choice to reject her, but did not FORCE him to continue loving her - if he ever did.
What she wanted was certainty that she would not be heartbroken again, and in the end she gave that up, too. And even Dumbledore says he thinks she did this out of love for Tom, although he adds that he is guessing; but he also adds something like 'I am sure I am right.'
