Ooh, they were *horrrible*. Orcs, essentially, but you're right - Rowling (like Tolkien) makes that particular sort of banal evil altogether too convincing. Speaking of Tolkien, he told his son Christopher during WWII that there were orcs everywhere, and they weren't all on the German side. But you probably knew that?
