Ooh, they were *horrrible*. Orcs, essentially, but you're right - Rowling (like Tolkien) makes that particular sort of banal evil altogether too convincing. Speaking of Tolkien, he told his son Christopher during WWII that there were orcs everywhere, and they weren't all on the German side. But you probably knew that?

I loved your little meditation on the letter "f" and am off to answer it, though I don't quite know what I am supposed to do.

(And did you read my latest on Snape's son Christopher? Begging shamelessly for readers - embarassed - but I would like to know what you think?)
