The issues here of love and forgiveness, of things meant but never said, resonate so clearly, even without the framework of the Potter universe. This is the everday tragedy of families. I smiled when I first started reading, because in my personal canon, I've always imagined Gran Prince as a Margaret. She's a tough old thing, isn't she? I see so much of Severus in her, including a great capacity for love, but an real lack of ability to express that affection. He'd have sensed that love if she'd invited him for dinner, but it never occurred to her until the moment was gone. My heart aches for both of them.
