Yes, I'm one of those who thought Snape was diminished! But as much as I dislike the way he turned out in DH, I still found his actions to be noble. He was acting out of love (for Lily), and I've always thought that protecting someone that you hate is much harder and nobler than protecting someone that you love, and yet he does it.
