Thanks for your comment! About the textbook and Snape's sense of humor, it's on page 638 (American edition) of HBP. It's after Hermione reports that Eileen Prince was Snape's mother, in the last chapter. Hermione says, "I thought the prince seemed to have a nasty sense of humor, but I would never have guessed he was a potential killer. . ."
And I do think Snape values control, and likes to control (as much as he can) what he does and commits to. I'm not at all sure he knew what he was promising here; if he did know, it's quite clear he was unhappy about making that promise. But there was no backing out.
About the html - I wish I knew *how* to fix it! I struggled for close to three hours to get this essay up last night, using Livejournal's rich text format editor. I didn't *do* anything to the html! And, when I try to edit it, I cannot see that long part I would like to delete. All I can think of doing (and it makes me feel sad and tired) is to delete the post altogether, go through the formatting struggle all over again (and it's still not formatted correctly) and, if I'm unlucky, end up with exactly the same problem.
Because I did not code any html. Livejournal did. I am feeling pretty frustrated right now, because it's such a long post, and then to have all that garbage tacked onto the end - who would ever want to read it?
