What I remember most about these books is the atmosphere of the old house -like you, I would love to visit it - the slightly eerie fen landscape, and the sense of the past and the present sharing the same space. Looking back on it now, it is very much the sense I sometimes get from historical documents - reading the words of people who are separated from me by centuries but whose concerns seem so alive and immediate that they could have just left the room. I don't think I even read all the books - I am sure that I never read the one about the gorilla, for example. I might just have a hunt through the local Oxfam shops to see if they have them . . .
