Dumbleodre the manipulator never had respect for anyone's choices. He did not trust people to make the choices he wanted them to so he manipulated and conditioned them until he was sure they would.
As for the goblins - from Rowling's interviews she believes they were just plain wrong. According to her the wizards are right to ignore their claims of ownership to artifacts. Nothing about trying to see the other POV, even when it is an 'other' she created herself.
