Tonks is legitimately an Auror, an adult cop, not some shrinking violet of maidenly sensitivity. And good catch that she and Snape have necessarily had some relationship during her formative years.

I can see an enduring chafe in Snape's character around people who have had it "easier." And who, while considering themselves up to "fighting Voldemort," can't stand a few home truths delivered with a sharp tongue. Just think for a moment about how Mad Eye Moody would have addressed the topic. :D
