Oh, I can understand that, but I actually love some of his poetry in LOTR - all of Sam's comic verse, for example. We were quoting the "troll" song at the dinner table just the other weekend; my Dad brought it up. ) And all the poems serve to (1) give backstory, (2) help bring the various cultures to life, and (3) illuminate the characters - especially Aragorn and Sam. I wouldn't argue that they are all great poetry, but, for me, the poems work in context. I do understand where you're coming from, though. )
