A fun meme from Greenwoodside-

She gave me a letter, and I was supposed to name 10 things I loved beginning with that letter. If you comment, I'll give you your own letter. Here it is - the letter "S". (It just occurred to me that I should put this entry behind a cut, as it's rather long. Here goes-)
"S" Wow! How shall I start?
1. Science Fiction. I am not a huge fan - far from it - but the SF I like, I really like. Particularly Ursula LeGuin and Nancy Farmer (both of whom also have a fantasy bent - so do Diane Duane and Madeleine L'Engle. I love all four of them). And, of course, I'm a trekker (specifically a Niner) and a Dr. Who fan.
2. Singing, both listening to it and doing it. I adore vocal music, particularly early polyphony, folksongs, and choral music. To me, the human voice is the first and most powerful musical instrument, and singing is just a natural response to the world.
3. Snakes! Well, I had to have that in there, because it begins with 's' and I do love animals. Though I really like dogs, cats and other mammals best, I was determined to catch a snake and keep it as a pet when I was a little girl. I actually did find a ring-necked snake under a rock by the river at my grandparent's place - put him in a jar or coffee can, but he climbed out and got away. Then I got bitten by a racer (whipsnake) when I was trying to catch it, and I stopped bothering the poor creatures. They are quite beautiful, in their way, though not at all cuddly.
4. Stories. I love these perhaps even more than songs; I was 'famous' - again, as a little girl - for reading everything that was printed, and I also love movies. I just love stories in any form - both my sister and I do storytelling, as well. To write a story that people find engaging and beautiful - and life-affirming - is one of my goals. (And I actually don't think you can separate storytelling from singing; I believe they always went together. In both cases, it's a matter of the voice conveying its own meaning.)
5. Snow! That is, provided you aren't under any pressure to go anywhere. It is so peaceful and beautiful to look at, and I love to see it coming down under the street lights (an early memory). It's also fun to play in, even for adults. We grownups should sled more! Forget the commuting!
6. Sam Gamgee. Perhaps my all-time favorite fictional character in a fantasy. Brave, honest, decent, nurturing, loyal AND funny. Who wouldn't love Sam? And besides, he's capable of intellectual, moral and emotional growth; is a good friend; and becomes a good father and husband. AND he sings! He's just a great guy, IMHO.
7. Snickers. One of my favorite candy bars.
8. Schubert. One of my all-time favorite classical musicians - especially the Lieder.
9. "Singing in the Rain" - one of my favorite movies; a very well-written and funny story and some great music and dance numbers.
10. Silence. I am not sure I love this, but it is essential for other things I love - music, conversation, and the Spirit. (That last was going to be meditation, but I really don't meditate - too lazy!) Without silence as a background, both music and deep thought of any kind would be impossible.
This is off the top of my head. Am I supposed to post it to my journal now - Is that how it works? Thanks - this was a fun meme!

Yep - you post it on your journal, then people on your own flist ask for a letter and it carries on being passed around.
