My sister has quite the menagerie in the library - tonight, she said, "The crickets are escaping all over the library. Alvin (an intruding chipmunk) must be delighted."

"Yeah, Alvin would eat those critics," I answered. "Crickets, I mean!"

"I wouldn't want to be a cricket," my sister continued.

"No, everyone is always after critics," I responded.

"It's no wonder they have such long legs," she said. "They have to leap all over the place."

Oh, the perils of being a critic! I mean cricket! I must have been more tired than I knew.

Slightly later, I was discussing the very odd behavior of one of the older macs at work, which seems to want to give up the ghost. I began talking about clean reinstalls, etc, and my sister responded, "Technobabble! Do you know, there's someone who actually wrote all that technobabble for Star Trek?"

"Is there, really?" said I.

"I don't know. 'The Transponders are all offline, captain,'" she answered. "Transponder - that's ridiculous. It sounds like a British Air flight. "

That is does! I must now go and hunt up system disks before I fall asleep - I need to attempt that clean reinstall tomorrow, if possible.

So - I asked my sister what Alvin the chipmunk was up to, and she said, "He's been trapped!" It seems they got an exterminator in at last - Alvin had been springing all the have - a - heart traps and eating the nuts and things out of them. But she told me: "It seems there was a trail of nuts leading up to the trap, and there Alvin was inside it, trembling." Poor little thing! The exterminator was going to bring him up to a local park and let him go there; I hope he'll be happy with the other chipmunks. I would quite like a pet chipmunk; it seems our Dad had one for awhile when he was a boy. His name (the chipmunk's) was Oscar.

So, anyway, Alvin is not going to eat those escaped crickets. The frogs, who do eat crickets, are due to be released in a week, and the menagerie in the library will be thinned considerably. Those bullfrogs are ferocious little beasts - they really are! - and I think my sister will be relieved to be rid of them. Of course, she'll still have Rubeus Hagrid Betta, who is three now, as far as we can make out, and doing very well.
